Landon Liboiron has worked extensively on Canadian productions, most recently as a series regular on the popular teen drama “Degrassi: The Next Generation.”His additional television credits include “Wild Roses,” “Flashpoint,” “Don’t Cry Now,” “Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness,” “The Dark Room” and “Mayerthorpe,” for which he won an AMPIA Award for Best Alberta Actor. With much buzz going on about the highly anticipated Terra Novaandfinally being able to see thefirst episode, I thought it’d be best to introduce the cast members of the show. We may know them now from the previews, but do we really know them for their previous work? Take a look at some of the cast’s previous works from other television series to well-known Hollywood movies. *This post may include some minor spoilers.

Jason O'mara plays Jim Shannon

—– Let’s start with the male lead of Terra Nova, Jason O’mara, who plays father Jim Shannon. His character in the first episode of Terra Novareflects a father who has been absent for 6 years. He is not only trying to start a new life for humanity, but also for his family. We not only get to see his character reveal emotions with his wife and children, but also grow into a Terra Novasecurity guard. There is much more to expect, but he definitely delivers as the strong male lead. O’Mara was born and raised in Sandycove in south Dublin, Ireland. He was planning on becoming a professional rugby player until an injury forced him to focus his major elsewhere. O’Mara graduated from Trinity College, Dublin with a degree in drama. Time spent in British repertory theater led to major roles in some of Britain and Ireland’s great theaters, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Almeida theater, London’s West End (the Apollo and Comedy theaters) and the Gate Theatre, Dublin. Concurrently, he appeared in many British TV series for both the BBC and ITV. A move to the US in 2002 allowed Jason opportunities in Hollywood where he has played series regular roles on several network television shows. His filmography dates back to 1995 with guest starring roles in many hit tv series such as CSI: Miami, Criminal Minds, and Grey’s Anatomy. You may have also seen him as Sam Tyler on the recently departed (2009) show,Life on Mars.

Stephen Lang plays Commander Taylor

—– Thenext actor, and probably the most noticeable to fans for his role in Avataras villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch, is Stephen Langwho plays a commander named Frank Taylor in the new series. His character is strong and aggressive, but unlike his Avatarcharacter, he is there to help lead the people of Terra Nova towards a better future. He comes off as very respectable and honorable, but there is a doubt to his character that seems untrustworthy. I may be wrong, but that’s something we will have to wait for to find out. Lang was born in New York City and graduated with a degree in English literature from Swarthmore College. A stage actor of great recognition, Stephen Lang has shaped a formidable career on and off the various stages of the United States and abroad. Broadway roles include a Tony-nominated performance as a homeless man in ‘The Speed of Darkness’, Happy in the Dustin Hoffman revival of ‘Death of a Salesman’, Colonel Jessep in ‘A Few Good Men’, and a thief alongside Quentin Tarantino and Marisa Tomei in ‘Wait Until Dark’. Off-Broadway credits include John Patrick Shanley’s ‘Defiance’, Anne Nelson’s ‘The Guys’, Arthur Miller’s ‘Finishing the Picture’, and his own play ‘Beyond Glory’ for which he received a Helen Hayes Award nomination. Television and Film credits include celebrated performances as Babe Ruth and Stonewall Jackson in ‘Babe Ruth’ and ‘Gods and Generals’ respectively, as well as acclaimed performances in ‘Last Exit to Brooklyn’, ‘Tombstone’, ‘Gettysburg’, Michael Mann’s hit TV show ‘Crime Story’, and an NBC revival of ‘The Fugitive’ featuring Tim Daly. He has been nominated for and won numerous awards including the Grace Prize, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Helen Hayes, and Tony awards.

Shelley Conn plays Elisabeth Shannon

—–Next up is the actress who plays Elisabeth Shannon, Shelley Conn. Is her character a strong female? She is the trauma surgeon on the medical team in Terra Nova, but it seems that she is not 100% hopeful with the decision to go back 85 million years into the past. She is caring to her children and has slowly connected back with Jim in the first episode. I still think her character has a lot of developing to do, but I am happy it is Shelley Conn. Most of you may have never even heard of this British actress, but she is here to stay in her first American series role. She was inspired by one of her school teachers which pushed her to graduate with a drama degree. After drama school, Conn had a series of bit-parts in various British films. Conn has now developed her roles between all three media (television, film and theatre), with a series of leading roles in various small budget European as well as British films; BBC character dramas such as The Innocence Project. There is not too much to really “type-up” about this actress, but I am certain that she will earn recognition for her role in Terra Novaand star in American features soon after.

Naomi Scott plays Maddy Shannon

—–This next actress, Naomi Scott, plays Maddy Shannon in Terra Nova. She is assumed to be the oldest daughter of the Shannon family (age not defined) and the most responsible. In the first episode, she seems to not play a big role. She shows her emotions when separating from her father, shows responsibility with her younger sister Zoe, but also mumbles her words to a potential love interest. I feel her character is still “fitting in” for the viewers and will establish more later on. Scott is probably best known for her role asMohini “Mo” Banjaree in the recent Disney Channel movie, Lemonade Mouth. Just like Conn, this was also her first role in an American production. She has already gained a fan following for her Disney role which will attract them to watch Terra Nova. Her first major acting role was an Disney Channel UK series Life Bites. Scott was also born in London. She began her singing career with the Bridge Church Youth Band and performed regularly in school musical and drama productions. She was later discovered by British pop singer Kelle Bryan from the all-girl band Eternal, who signed her as a client.

Landon Liboiron plays Josh Shannon

—–Last up is the troubled son Josh Shannon in Terra Nova,played by Landon Liboiron. We see him as a typical teenage boy who shows a distant demeanor towards his family. Raised by his mother, Elisabeth, for the past 6 years we see his non-existent relationship with his father, Jim. He also shows the most dissatisfaction with the choice to leave the future and becomes rebellious to take any direction from his family. We quickly see him connect with a girl named Skye (played by Allison Miller) in which their connection grows quickly in the first set of scenes. Liboiron was born in Jenner, Alberta (Canada). As a child, Landon’s mother would drive to Vancouver, British Columbia, in order for him to attend acting classes and auditions. Dating back to 2007, Liboiron appeared in a handful of television series, but in 2009 was cast in the popular Canadian teen drama television seriesDegrassi: The Next Generation.

British-born actress Naomi Scott makes her American television debut as book-smart “Maddy Shannon” on TERRA NOVA.Scott recently completed production on the original musical “Lemonade Mouth,” based on the popular book of the same name. In the film, Scott plays one of five high school students who meet in detention and decide to form a band to champion the underdogs in their school. Malcolm Wallace, who's been in the prehistoric world longer than Jim and Elizabeth Shannon. He's a doctor, who knew Elizabeth Shannon in medical school. And the two of them were an item twenty years ago — before Malcolm announced that he never wanted to have children, because he couldn't stand to bring new people into the doomed, dying world of the mid-22nd century. So Elizabeth and Malcolm broke up, and soon afterwards Elizabeth hooked up with Jim.
Elizabeth and Malcolm have to work together to save someone from a deadly disease whose only cure is a rare plant that they're having trouble finding — and meanwhile, Jim can tell that Malcolm still has a thing for his wife. In fact, Malcolm seems quite surprised that Elizabeth's husband, who was supposed to be in jail in the future, has made his way back to the past. Can you see the drama brewing yet?
